Borno Govt Plans Six Irrigation Schemes

The Borno Government said on Tuesday in Maiduguri that it planned?to set up six irrigation centres across the state in line with the ongoing? agricultural transformation programme

The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Babaka Garbai, disclosed?this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Garbai explained that the schemes would be located? across the three senatorial zones of the state for effectiveness, including Shani and Gwoza towns in the southern senatorial district.

“Other areas will include Alau, Konduga and Jere in Borno Central, while Mobbar has been selected in the northern senatorial district.''

He said that the aim was to harness the “enormous'' agricultural potential of the state by creating jobs for the teaming population of unemployed youths.

Garbai said that that government?last week awarded a N457-million contract to an agro-allied company for the supply of equipment, as a prelude to the take-off of the scheme.

“The idea of the irrigation scheme is to transform the mundane method of farming to modern and effective irrigation system.''

He said that the schemes would create about 300,000 direct and indirect jobs to youths and families across the state. (NAN)
