Bankers Game: Skye Bank, Standard -Chartered Bank Lead Groups

Jide Shiwoku, Lawrence Ojo and Funlola Oni scored a goal each to give Standard Chartered Bank the biggest win of the weekend and the best scoring side of the 2012 Nigeria Bankers Game which entered week two at the University of Lagos Sports Complex. Stan-Chart shot to the top of Group B with an emphatic 3-1 grinding of a very enterprising Ecobank team that got a consolatory goal off the effort of Chinedu Oduwhich.

“It is our first match so far and we met a team that already had a feel of the competition. We will definitely make amends in the matches to follow, I promise you”, declared Odu as the team looks forward to their next match against Keystone Bank on Saturday.

The Match Day 2 which featured mainly teams in Group B however began with a 0-0 draw between Union Bank and Enterprise Bank.? The Stallion Boys enjoyed high profile support from their Management as the Managing Director was on hand with the Corporate Affairs Director to cheer them on but they were only able to have Gabriel Edem emerge the MVP.

Super-sub, Abdulrasheed Kayode nicked it for Skye Bank as they continued their fairy tale start to equaling the record Cup wins of UBA with a 1-0 piping of hard fighting Sterling Bank. Sterling Bank, coming from their deserved 0-0 draw against Fidelity Bank on the opening day was almost acquiring a reputation for defensive play when they stalemated the game in the first 45 minutes. But the entry of Kayode, who is chasing a historic 50 goals in all matches, changed the tide as his volley settled inside the net to keep final score at 1-0. It is now six maximum points from two games for the cup holders who will enjoy a rest day in week 3 this Saturday. The MVP award went to Skye Bank’s defender, Tayo Adeyemi.??

UBA’s ambition to remain the record cup winning side met a resistance from Diamond Bank as both sides shared the points in a match that turned a direct contest between UBA forward Rilwan Adewusi and Diamond Bank goalkeeper, Chigaemezu Anokwu, whose heroics earned him the MVP award for the nil all encounter.

Stan-Chart now leads the group with three points and is followed by UBA and Diamond Bank with one point apiece while Ecobank brings up the rear with no point.
