Abuja High Courts Yet To Resume After Vacation

High Courts in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) which went on annual vacation eight weeks ago, have yet to commence formal sittings, a week after the end of the vacation.

A correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) who went round some courts in the territory on Thursday, reports that they were devoid of activities.

In some of the courts visited, a few staff were seen hanging outside their offices discussing, while others were seen arguing on last weekend match between Liverpool and Manchester United.

At the Federal High Court Lugbe, Mr Samuel Miri, the court’s Assistant Registrar, told NAN that the presiding judge, Justice Angela Atoluka, who was deployed to the Federal High Court, Maitama, during the vacation had resumed, but yet to commence work.

Miri claimed that the judge may commence duty on October 3.

A senior official at Maitama High Court, however, attributed the late commencement of work by the judges to the Judges' Conference which ended in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, last week.

?“The week the judges were expected to resume from vacation coincided with their conference which was held in Uyo.

“The judges came back from the conference exhausted and needed additional days of rest”, the official who requested anonymity told NAN.

A Plaintiff, Mr Timothy Maiyaki, who had his case pending in one of the courts, slated for hearing this week, got one month adjournment.
