Police Arraign 2 Men For Threatening Lives Of Policemen

The police in Akure on Wednesday arraigned two men, Ajayi Olalekan and Ajayi Francis, in court over an alleged threat to the lives of police officers at a station in Akure.

The accused persons, who were arraigned before Chief Magistrate Adejoke Adegoroye, allegedly committed the offence with others now at large on Oct. 9.

Prosecutor Martins Olowofeso said the offence was committed at the Oda Police Station, Ala Quarters, Akure.

The accused persons were arraigned for threatening to deal with every policemen and women at the station before the coming governorship election.

Olowofeso said the offence was contrary to Section 249(1) of the Criminal Code Laws of Ondo State 2006.

Olalekan was accused of assaulting Cpl. Godwin Moses (F/No 364897) by slapping him on the face contrary to Section 356(2) of the Criminal Code laws of Ondo State 2006.

He was also accused of stealing a burglary proof valued N13,000, property of Atiba Dele, contrary to Section 390(9) of the Criminal Code Laws of Ondo State 2006.

The two accused persons pleaded not guilty to the charges, read to them in Yoruba language.

Olowofeso told the court that he had six witnesses to testify against the two accused persons with only two of them in court and applied for adjournment to enable him to assemble others.

The counsel to the accused persons, Mr Azeez Agbaje, who did not oppose the application, urged the court to grant bail to his client pending the determination of the case.

Agbaje promised that the accused persons would not jump bail if granted and would also provide credible sureties to take them on bail.

In her ruling, the magistrate granted bail to the accused persons in the sum of N500,000 each and two sureties in like sum.

Adegoroye ruled that the sureties must swear to affidavits of means and reside within the jurisdiction of the court, adding that one of them must be a civil servant.

She adjourned the case to Oct. 23, for hearing.
