Israeli Envoy Advises UN On Middle-East Crisis

The outgoing Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Moshe Ram, on Friday urged the United Nations (UN) to sustain the peace-keeping interventions in crisis-ridden Syria and other areas of the Middle-East.

Ram made the suggestion in Lagos at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) lecture series.

The theme of his lecture was, “Israel and Arab Spring: The Prospects of Regional Peace and Security“.

He advised the organisation not to be deterred by its `seemingly unsuccessful interventions' in the crisis so far.

“The United Nations, obviously, has since the beginning of the crisis in Syria and Egypt, been committed to peaceful resolutions.

“But, the international organisation needs to urgently do more. The UN should strive to constantly be on top of worrisome developments in the Middle-East,“ he said.

Ram said that one of the vital roles of the UN was to ensure peaceful resolution of conflicts and crisis, at the regional, continental and international levels.

The envoy said that, if something urgent was not done about the lingering crisis, it would have adverse consequences on neighbouring countries and communities.

“Already, there are obvious signs of disintegration in Syria today. Unfolding event in Syria today shows clearly that there is no longer a central control of the political system.

“Smaller communities around Syria and other crisis-ridden places in the Middle-East are no doubt, going to be affected, “ he said.

Ram urged the UN to beef up security network in the troubled countries, to ensure peaceful co-existence between the rival parties.

The envoy said, however, that relations between Nigeria and Israel in the last three years was cordial, adding that there were opportunities for improvement in the years ahead.
