Defamation: Senator Kanti Drags Man To Court

Former Senate Majority Whip, Senator Mahmud Kanti has instituted a legal action against one Alhaji Bala Mamman Ingawa at the Katsina Upper Shariah Court sitting in Katsina over alleged defamation of character.

Kanti, through his counsel, Barrister Saadu Garba, told the court that the accused, Bala Ingawa, had made some defamatory statements against Sen. Kanti in an interview broadcast by the Hausa Service of the Voice of America (VOA)

He alleged that the accused’s false and malicious comments had lowered the former senator’s self esteem in the eyes of the public.

When the matter came up for mention yesterday, counsel to the accused, Barrister Bako Kurgwi Nasir, told the court that he was not served with details of the allegations and urged the court to direct that he be served to enable him to respond.

Presiding Sharia court judge, Yusuf Bala, directed that counsel to the accused be served with details of the allegations leveled against his client and adjourned the matter to November 12,2012 for continuation of hearing.
