Some concerned Nigerians and civil society groups have cautioned the Federal Government against non-implementation of the recommendations of the Nuhu Ribadu-led Oil Probe Committee, which submitted its report to President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday.
They particularly charged the President not to let the report go the same way like others before it, which were never implemented.
The Lead Director, Centre for Social Justice, Barrister Eze Onyekpere, told LEADERSHIP SUNDAY that the unwarranted controversy, which a few a members of the committee stirred, was not serious enough to alter the credibility of the exercise.?
He said: “If there are people to be prosecuted, they must be prosecuted. The report should not be swept under the carpet.”
Onyekpere said the government must speed up the process to ensure that the recommendations of the committee were not delayed.
Also, Chairman of the Unity Forum, Alhaji Musa Maigida Abdu, said he was convinced that the committee did a thorough job and asked the president to examine the recommendations and take appropriate action.
Abdu said: “Ribadu has always done a good job. But I hope that the president will look into the report and ensure that the recommendations are not swept under the rug.”? He said it was unexpected for former head of service, Mr. Steve Oronsaye, to have spoken in the presence of the president in the manner he did
“It is in bad faith for the former head of service to have said the report should be rejected. If he had any problem with the recommendations, the president said, he should have put it in writing. What he did and the manner with which he presented his case was rude, he should have respected the president.”
When contacted, the Secretary-General of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) said the group was still studying the report and would soon issue its recommendations.
