FEC Approves N5.1bn For Rehabilitation Of UN Building In Abuja

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday approved N5.1 billion for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of some sections of the United Nations’ Building in Abuja, which was bombed by Boko Haram on Aug. 26, 2011.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Sen. Bala Muhammad, made this known while briefing State House Correspondents on the outcome of the weekly FEC meeting, presided over by Vice President Namadi Sambo.

He said the rebuilding of the UN building was in fulfilment of the pledge made by the Federal Government.

He added that the project would be executed by Julius Berger Nigeria, which he said, had already subjected the building to integrity test.

“This building has been subjected to an integrity test by the best in the world and a section will be rebuilt while the rest will remain and it is going to also provide some additions to the need of the United Nations Agencies, that is why it is rising to the cost of N5.1billion, and indeed, it is going to be done by Julius Berger within a period of only 16 months.”

Also the Minister of Information, Mr Labaran Maku, said prior to the approval, the government had facilitated the world body by providing its different departments with temporary office accommodation in parts of Abuja.

Maku further told the correspondents that the council approved the purchase of an air ambulance jet for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

He said that after the adoption of the previous conclusion, a Presidential Memorandum was tabled seeking council’s approval for the purchase of one brand new air ambulance.

The minister said the branded Cessna Citation Sovereign Jet Aircraft fully equipped and customised with emergency medical facilities for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

He said the council also approved N554 million for the procurement of seven new CAT 320DL Hydraulic Excavators for the agency to enhance its capacity to cope with emergency incidences in an effective and timely manner.

According to him, the council also approved a draft Framework for the National Integrated Infrastructure Master Plan (NIIMP).

He said the current infrastructure stock of the country would not be enough to support the Economic Growth Targets of the Vision 20:2020 and the government's Transformation Agenda.
