Authorities of the Bayelsa Police Command have commenced a mop up of vehicles, especially those allegedly abandoned by suspected armed bandits along the major streets of the state capital, saying the action was to check the use of such vehicles for bombing and other criminal activities.
The operation,which will lead to the recovery of such vehicles and many others showcased as exhibits seized and in the custody of the State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID) is a pre-emotive measure by the police to check the breach of peace and security in the state.
The operation was reportedly kick-started by the former police commissioner, Mr. Chris Olakpe, with an order that the bomb disposal unit of the command to step up its operations of combing abandoned and rickety vehicles found on the streets and major highways in the state.
The decision, according to the Police, is backed by an order from the Chief Magistrate in accordance with section 32 of the Police Act cap P19 and has exceeded the mandatory six months in the custody of the State Criminal Investigation Department.
