LIRS Seals 51 Companies For Tax Evasion

The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) says it sealed 51 companies in the last three months for offences relating to tax evasion.

?Mrs Folasade Coker-Afolayan, the Head of Distrain Unit of LIRS, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday.

She said that the sealed companies defaulted in remitting a total of N273.6 million.

Coker-Afolayan, who led the enforcement team on the occasions, said that the companies were sealed for not remitting deductions of workers’ personal income tax for one to six years.

Coker-Afolayan described the enforcement exercise, which began from Sept. 19, as very successful.

“Enforcement of tax laws enhances tax payment and compliance.

“This is because companies sealed for default in their payments will not like to be distrained a second time.

“Enforcement of the laws also encourages companies to remit their workers’ taxes on time to avoid being sealed,” she said.

Coker-Afolayan said that the payment of tax was a civic responsibility meant to be obeyed by all law abiding persons. (NAN)
