Lagos Commuters Stranded As BRT Drivers Begin Strike

Commuters were yesterday stranded in Lagos following the disagreement between the management of the Lagos State Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and drivers in its employ.

For the better part of the day, passengers at their terminals groan for hours waiting endlessly for the buses to take them to their destinations.?

A passenger who identified himself as Gabriel said,” I have been on queue here for hours and no buses are moving and they are not even communicating with us. But we learnt the drivers are on strike

Confirming the development, the Head of Communications, Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authourity (LAMATA) Mr. Kola Ojelabi told LEADERSHIP SUNDAY on telephone that,” There was an issue they had with management that made them to stop work but it has been resolved and they have resumed full operations”

LEADERSHIP SUNDAY gathered that the drivers were demanding better welfare package from the management , while also seeking the recall of the 23 driver dismissed by the management in July this year said to be guilty of falsification of certificates, low productivity, absenteeism, among others.

According to the Chairman of Lagos BRT, Sunday Yusuff, “management, about some months ago embarked on an exercise to verify the documents of of all workers during which they were required to submit original copies of their certificates and other documents.

“We found that several drivers were? using expired licenses…some staffers presented fake certificates, while some who were employed based on the qualification they claimed they have could not present papers to back up their claims…some did not even show up at all for the exercise. The verification exercise was transparently carried out.” he said.
