The coming on stream of new National Integrated Power Projects (NIPP), especially newly commissioned generating units at thermal power stations in Omotosho and Olorunsogo, have contributed to raising power generation to an all-time high of 4,502.2 megawatt (MW).
Also, President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday in Kaduna assured Nigerians that his administration would perform better in the coming year, saying his wish was for Nigeria to have constant electricity and for Nigerians to do away with generating set for good.
The new power generation peak of 4,502.2MW, according to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), was achieved last Friday, and was efficiently wheeled by the company.
The company’s assistant general manager (Public Affairs), Mr Dave Ifabiyi, who disclosed this yesterday in a statement, also revealed that the new figure was an improvement on the 4,454.1MW attained on Wednesday, two days earlier.
TCN chief executive officer (CEO), Engr. Olusola Akinniranye, noted that the new generation figure surpassed the December 2012 target of 4,500MW, and explained that this feat was made possible by the improvement in gas supply.
The TCN boss further restated the company’s commitment to strengthening the transmission grid by restoring all ongoing transmission networks.
“The TCN is not relenting in its efforts to continue to strengthen the transmission grid. Efforts are presently ongoing to restore the Benin-Egbin 330KV line as well as complete the new transmission–distribution interface projects which will further enhance the company’s power evacuation capacity,” Akinniranye said.
He gave the assurance that “as gas supply continues to improve and more NIPPs come on stream, the transmission and distribution companies will continue to harness every available generation to ensure that stable electricity supply is delivered to electricity customers.”
He appealed to Nigerians to continue to partner with the company in protecting electricity installations nationwide, stressing that the need to forestall any act of vandalism is vital in the transmission and sustenance of power generated, as vandalism constitutes a major setback in the improvement of power supply situation in the country.
