The Kwara Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) says it arrested 84 suspected drug traffickers and seized 556,887 kilogramme of hard drugs in 2009.

The state’s commander of the NDLEA Mr Nse Jack-Inam, anoounced this on Sunday while fielding questions from newsmen.

He said the 84 suspects arrested were made up of 77 males and 7 females.

Jack-Inam said the command also destroyed 1.8 acres of Indian hemp farm in Kawo village in Edu Local Government Area of the the state between January and December 2009.

According to him, the seized drugs are made up of 554.537 kilogrames of Cannabis Sativa and 12.35 kilograms of Psychotropic Substances.

Jack-Inam said that during the peroid, the command secured 38 convictions at the Federal High Court, Ilorin.

He said that 61 Indian hemp smokers and two drug dependent persons were successfully counseled and rehabilitated by the command.

The commander also disclosed that, so far. this year, 11 persons had been arrested and some hard drugs were also recovered from them.

According to him, six of the suspects have been prosecuted and sentenced to various jail terms in January by the Federal High Court, Ilorin, while other cases are still pending.

The gave the assurance that the command would ensure that all those involved in the illicit drugs trafficking are brought to book.
