Where do Mazembe rank?

1 February 2011

TP Mazembe recorded a second straight victory in the African Super Cup at the weekend when they edged Morocco’s FUS Rabat on penalties.

The African champions have had a tremendous time of late, also reaching the final of the FIFA Club World Cup, where they lost to Inter Milan.

And so given all of this success, just where does this leave Mazembe on the list of all-time most successful clubs in Africa?

If you look at number of trophies won, which would include the African Champions League, African Confederation Cup, Super Cup, and the now defunct Cup Winners’ Cup and CAF Cups, the undisputed kings are Al Ahly of Egypt with 15 trophies in all.

They also lead in the most Champions League successes (six), Cup Winners’ Cups (four) and Super Cups (four), a remarkable record for the Cairo side.

Second on the list would be Zamalek with 11 trophies in total, including five Champions Leagues, making it very difficult to argue against their runner-up place.

Third on the list with eight trophies is Etoile du Sahel, but just one Champions League title.

That is why it would be tempting to place TP Mazembe, who have four Champions League titles to date, above them, as although they only have seven trophies in total, one behind Etoile, they have won the ‘big one on four times as many occasions, which has to count for something.

One behind TP Mazembe on six trophy successes are JS Kabylie of Algeria, though they have just two Champions League successes to date, as well as Morocco’s Raja Casablanca.

The teams with the most trophy successes, but who have never won the Champions League, are Al Mokawloon of Egypt, Africa Sports of Cote d’Ivoire and CS Sfaxien of Tunisia, who each have three trophies in their cabinet.
