The continuous killing of notable
politicians and security operatives by suspected members of the Boko
Haram sect in Borno State has prevented the State House of Assembly
from functioning.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that
the House last sat on January 18, and adjourned for one week but is yet
to resume. The members of the assembly including the Speaker, Modu Goni
are reportedly avoiding their offices out of fear that they might be
attacked. Only a few members of the House were at the Assembly complex
yesterday to resume proceedings, and the speaker quickly re-adjourned
sitting till today. Mr Goni said that the adjournment was to enable him
to travel to his home town, Malamfatori, to obtain his voter’s card.

Meanwhile, security has been beefed up at the Assembly complex, with
armed police and military officials patrolling the premises. Boko Haram
on Wednesday issued posters around the city warning people to stay away
from politicians and security operatives as it claimed responsibility
for the assassination of the ANPP’s governorship candidate in the state
a week ago. The Islamic sect has also embarked on a number of sporadic
killings in the state targeting security operatives and clergymen.
