While the People’s
Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State is battling with infighting, the
state chapter of the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP)
has taken a position to adopt a joint candidate to vie for the office
of the governor in the April elections.

The chairman of the
group, Owolabi Odebudo said at a press conference held at Hero
Conference Centre, Abeokuta that there is no going back on this.

He explained that
the group is against the call for zoning of the governorship ticket to
a particular part of the state, stressing that what is paramount to the
CNPP is leadership that is credible, capable and ready to deliver good
governance.

“Based on the
aforementioned, the CNPP is seriously considering the adoption of a
consensus candidate to vie for the office of the governor of the state.
For this stronger reason, the next governor can emerge from any of the
three senatorial district comprising the Gateway State, irrespective of
religion or gender,” he said.

Mr Odebudo
emphasised that the conference is working hard to present strong
candidates that will contend with the ruling People’s Democratic Party
in the state. “Hence, in our resolve to continually monitor the various
development in order to free the good people of Ogun State from
sectional and tribal politics, the CNPP totally rejects some people’s
prescription of zoning the governorship to any part of the state. It is
the stand of the CNPP that leadership should evolve organically,
irrespective of wherever anybody that is credible, capable and ready to
deliver good government comes from,” he said.

Open the state assembly

In a related
development, the body has expressed concern over the prolonged shutting
down of the state House of Assembly.Mr Odebudo said this has eroded the
link between legislative functions and good governance.

“The CNPP in the
recent past has come to realise that the Ogun State House of Assembly,
the legislative arm of government has ceased to perform its oversight
functions for nearly four months. This is a complete infraction on our
fundamental rights to good governance which needs to be corrected,” he
said.
