Chris Brown outburst divides fans, album soars

Anny set to release sophomore album

Gospel singer, Anne Emmanuel Ibrahim, popularly known as Anny, will release her sophomore album titled ‘Time’ very soon.

Speaking in an
interview, the singer said the album will be a 15-tracker featuring
collaborations with gospel musician, Sammy Okposo, ‘Kokoroko’ crooner,
Kefee, Soul-E, and producer, Mekoyo.

Anny disclosed that she has been busy after releasing ‘Mercy’, her debut album.

“I have spent
quality time recording the songs on my new album because I wanted to
have something for everybody. In order to redefine my sound, I made
sure I worked with the best crop of producers in Nigeria and featured
talented leading acts in some songs. I have been receiving lots of
comments on the singles I released, but there is a lot more to enjoy in
the album,” she said.

The 2009 Nigeria
Music Video Awards (NMVA) nominee also disclosed that she worked with
talented producers including Wole Oni, Sammie Okposo, Mekoyo, K.Solo
and Phat- E while recording ‘Time’.

Anny is a Banking
and Finance graduate of Kano State Polytechnic and holds a Masters
degree in Management from Bayero University, Kano.

2 Face’s record outfit to host ‘Live Beats’

Hypertek Entertainment and its management company, Now Musik, is set to host ‘Live Beats’ to dinner.

Currently in its
15th year, ‘Live Beats’ is a music TV programme that provides a
“platform for budding artists as well as established acts and disc
jockeys (DJs) to express themselves.”

Speaking about the
show, which has featured music acts including the defunct Plantashun
Boiz, Daddy Showkey, Orits Wiliki, Danny Wilson, KC Presh, P Square,
Jimmy Jatt, Ras Kimono, Femi Kuti, Charly Boy, Zdon Paporella, Mighty
Mouse Remi, Zaaki Adzay, and Baba Fryo, the producer, Cally Ikpe,
said perseverance has kept him in business.

“I have always
believed that it just must work. It must work, since God gave me the
vision. I’m very clear about it. I know it could go through hard times
here and there, but I knew that eventually when the time comes, we’ll
begin to reap,” Cally said.

He had revealed
during the show’s 10th year anniversary held at Eko Hotel Suites
in 2006 that “We started [Live Beats] from almost a zero situation. By
that, I mean an era when we tried to juxtapose music videos as produced
by Nigerians and those of their international counterparts. Then, it
was a pity doing so unlike the situation where now, the videos are
played side by side and sometimes we even outdo them in terms of
concept and even equipment. Now, you watch the international channels
and see the chart system. There’s a Nigerian produced music video
occupying number one position and then an American’s occupying number
two or three. I thank God that we’ve been around long enough to see the
music revolution happen. We’re savouring it now and I’m most proud of
it.”

Star Quest 2011: Lagos audition records large turnout

Organisers of Star
Quest have revealed that they recorded, “a huge turnout of contestants”
on Tuesday, March 22, at the Lagos audition for this year’s edition of
the competition. The audition was held at the National Theatre, Iganmu.

“The contestants,
made up of young adults of varying ages, turned up in their thousands
to partake in the screening process that would grant them access into
the musical competition proper,” noted a release.

It added that,
“while some singers amongst the contestants rendered songs cutting
across Rhythm and Blues, Pop, Soul, and Gospel genres, others dished
out rap lyrics from both foreign and local hip-hop songs.

“There were also a
good number of instrumentalists who were tested on their ability to
play a range of musical instruments that include the drum set, trumpet
and guitar.”

Judges, comprising
Freeze, Paul Play, and KC from KC Presh, a one time winner in the show,
reportedly “had a challenging task screening hopefuls and separating
those gifted in music from the untalented lot.”

Since its debut in
2002, Star Quest has produced several winners including KC Presh,
D’Accord, D’Jewels, Diamonds, The Pulse, and Jukebox.

Chris Brown outburst divides fans, album soars

Singer, Chris
Brown, angrily stormed out of a TV studio on Tuesday, reigniting
controversy over his 2009 assault on singer, Rihanna, but helping to
send his new album to the top of iTunes charts.

Brown, 21, who has
struggled to repair his image after hitting and punching his then
girlfriend two years ago, left behind a smashed window in his dressing
room after dodging questions about the incident in an interview on ABC
television’s ‘Good Morning America’.

News of the
outburst divided fans of the RB singer, with viewers of ABC’s
highly-rated TV competition, ‘Dancing with the Stars’, demanding the
cancellation of a planned performance by Brown on next week’s show.

However, Brown’s
new album, ‘F.A.M.E’, on the Jive record label, was the top downloaded
album on Apples’ iTunes store on its first day of release Tuesday, an
Apple spokesman said.

Brown’s music
career stalled after he pleaded guilty to assaulting Rihanna in
February 2009, setting off a national debate on young, abusive
relationships. He publicly apologised, then underwent court-ordered
domestic violence counseling, and spent six months performing community
service.

But when pressed
about the incident on ‘Good Morning America’, Brown appeared annoyed
and said; “It’s not really a big deal to me now, as far as that
situation. I think I’m past that in my life. Today’s the album day, so
that’s what I’m focused on.”

He followed up with
a Twitter message – according to media reports, which he later deleted
from his account – saying, “I’m so over people bringing this past shit
up!!! Yet we praise Charlie sheen and other celebs for there bullshit.”
(Spelling and grammar are unchanged).

Some fans agreed.
“We love you Chris!! There’s no reason for anyone to even ask him about
Rihanna anymore; ABC should have had something better to talk about as
that is old,” wrote supporter nthnbtlove on the MTV message boards.

But viewers of the ABC’s top-rated reality show felt differently. Brown is scheduled to sing on the show in a week’s time.

“His freakout on
GMA proves how scary and unpredictable he is. If ABC does not do the
right thing and ban him, I will have no choice but to not watch that
episode,” wrote Chadcronin on the official ‘Dancing’ message boards.

ABC did not return calls for comments on Brown’s planned ‘Dancing
with the Stars’ appearance. ABC News said in a statement; “As always,
we asked questions that are relevant and newsworthy, and that’s what we
did in this interview with Mr. Brown.”
