Council arrests 61 persons over sanitation offences

No fewer than 61 persons have been arrested and tried by the Mobile Court sitting in Afuze in Owan East Council Area of Edo State over sanitation offences.

Braimah Abdulsalami, the Head, Environmental Department of the Council, disclosed this on Monday in Afuze, Edo, while inspecting the refuse dumps at Warake community. Mr Abdulsalami said that 30 of the people arrested, were jailed for six months after failing to pay the N5,000 fine option as provided by law. The culprits were found guilty of violating the provisions of the weekly Monday sanitation exercise in some parts of the state. Mr Abdulsalami reminded the people that the law prohibiting the indiscriminate dumping of refuse in unauthorized places is still in full force and advised them against the practice. He was unhappy with the unhygienic condition of the garri processing centres in the area and advised the operators to keep them clean.
