Poor Power Supply: Kubwa Village Residents Cry Out

Residents of Old and New Maitama in Kubwa Village, a popular suburb of Abuja have cried out over poor electricity supply and payment of bills which they said were too much compared to the amount of electricity supply availed to the area.

Residents, who spoke with LEADERSHIP on Monday said the area hardly get electricity supply, but yet receive big bills from the Power Holdings Company of Nigeria every month.

One of them, Chike Unor said, “We understand that the country has power challenges, but it is very clear that the PHCN is cheating us here in Kubwa Village. If you go to Federal Housing area, you will see that they have light (electricity) frequently. What is our crime?”

“NEPA (PHCN) gives us electricity only a couple of days in a whole month. Several times, they just flash us like twice within a few minutes and you will never see the light again. Last month, our compound was served with N6000 bill and we are only eight tenants.

“The most painful thing is that we don’t see the light; we don’t use any electricity for anything, yet we get all this big bills. This is total wickedness. We are begging the government of the FCT to intervene. It is not this bad in other areas in Abuja and we know it,” lamented Uche Chukwuma, who lives and sells cloths on Jaji Street in New Maitama, Kubwa Village.

According to Mohammed Sanni, who runs a hotel in Old Maitama area of Kubwa, doing business has been hell in the area.

He said, “We don’t always have light at all. We do have electricity may be in a total of 20 hours or even less in one month and when it comes it’s usually so low that we don’t use it for anything. So, we still have to use the generator.

“If you calculate how many hours we have in a day, in a week and then in a month, you will know what I mean when I say we don’t have light up to 20 hours in a month. It is very frustrating. All the little money we make from this business goes into the purchase of diesel and into the maintenance of our two generators. Please, help us tell the FCT government to come to our aid.”
