EU Pledges To Fight Terrorism

The Head of European Union delegation to Nigeria, Dr. David Macrae, has pledged partnership with the Nigerian government in combating international terrorism,

Speaking at the 8th National Seminar On Economic Crime organized by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commision (EFCC) yesterday, Macrae said that the EU was disturbed by the bombing of the UN building in Abuja recently and viewed the attack as one against several nationalities of the world.

He said EU would collaborate with the Federal Government on ways of resolving the conditions that led to the worsening terrorist attacks in Nigeria

He said although the nature of cooperation with the Federal Government was already known, details of such collaboration would not be made public as they were highly classified security details. While expressing his condolence to those who were bereaved in the attack, Macrae said government needed to take fight against corruption seriously as it played a key role in causing instability in society.

“ Terrorism is a crime. But financial crime is at the root of many of the acts of terror that we see today around the world. The one is linked with the other. So we need to address these issues with a lot of carefulness.

“Terrorism is connected with other crime because it denies some people things that are ordinarily due to them. And it is also a breeding ground for all other kinds of mischief. We support the Federal Government in her resolve to tackle the problem and would continue to offer assistance. Innocent people are usually the victim of acts of terror. We condemn this and are working with your government to resolve the root cause of the problems so that there can be peace and stability again”, he said.
