Police Prevents Uproar Over Alleged Ritual Killing

Quick intervention of security operatives at Kauran-Namoda in Zamfara yesterday, prevented civil disturbance, following the discovery of the corpse of a 23-year old boy believed to have been killed for rituals. The incident led to the burning down of a shop belonging to one Arowolo Olajide.

It was gathered that Yusuf Shehu, 23, left his family house at 4: 00 p.m. on September 6th? but did not return, prompting his family to report his disappearance to the police.
A family source who spoke to news men on condition of anonymity said that it was when the family intensified search for the missing man that his mutilated body was found by the riverside along Sabon-Gari in Kauran Namoda with some of his vital organs missing. On identifying the corpse, the police was notified and the corpse was claimed and later buried in accordance with Islamic rites.

Shehu’s death however triggered violence by youths in the town who strongly suspected a certain Olajide, a retired lecturer of the Federal Polytechnic Kauran-Namoda, as responsible for the young man’s death for ritual purposes.

According to the youths, Olajide was dismissed from the services of the polytechnic for his alleged involvement in cult-related activities resulting to scores of deaths.
Confirming the incident, the Sole Administrator of Kauran Namoda Local Government Council, Alhaji Kasim Idirs, said that security men are in control of the situation and a committee has been set up by the council to investigate allegations against Olajide.

While urging people of the town to maintain peace, the sole administrator confirmed that Olajide was currently in safe custody, pending the outcome of the committee’s investigation. (NAN)
