Niger State Governor Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu has condoled with the management and staff of The Guardian Newspapers over the death of its publisher, Mr Alex Ibru, describing the death as a great loss to journalism and the nation.
In a condolence message issued in Minna, capital of Niger, state yesterday, by his Chief Press Secretary, Malam Danladi Ndayebo, the governor described the late Ibru as a jack of all trade and master of all, emphasising that the late publisher excelled in all areas he ventured into, with exceptional mark of integrity and discipline.
The statement read in part,“It is no longer news that the late Alex Ibru presided over one of Africa’s most influential newspapers because of his rare vision and good leadership”
Aliyu noted that since The Guardian was introduced to the reading public in 1983, the paper had remained true its founding philosophy of presenting balanced coverage of events and promoting the best interests of Nigeria.
The governor recalled that as Minister of Internal Affairs, the late Ibru performed creditably and did not interfere with the running of The Guardian even when the newspaper held several views that ran contrary to those of the government under which he served.
The statement also hailed Ibru‘s contribution to promotion of peace and unity in the country through the Ibru Centre, an international ecumenical centre founded by him to enhance inter and intra religious affairs.
