Subsidy: Protest Based On Past Experience – VC

The Vice Chancellor of Babcock University, Ilisan, Ogun State,Professor Kayode Makinde, has said that the rejection of? President Goodluck Jonathan’s proposal by Nigerians should not be seen as lack of understanding on their part but a protest against previous exercises.

Professor Makinde made this observation in Ibadan, yesterday, in a chat with newsmen at the first annual luncheon and award ceremony of the Oyo area chapter of Bible Society of Nigeria (BSN).

The University administrator declared that contrary to the belief in some quarters that the inherent values of the policy were not known to the citizens, Nigerians he said? well informed and enlightened enough to appreciate and show understanding of good intentions, but noted that their concern was based on lack of result from similar exercises in the past.

He said, “Nigerians are no fools, all what the government is saying about the gains of the removal are good intentions, which are well thought out and if well carried out, everybody will feel it, but, this is not the first time subsidy would be removed and such promises made.

“In essence, what Nigerians are saying is that the government should account for the gains made from the previous exercises so as to assure them that similar gains to be made from the proposed removal will be judiciously used and will not go into private pockets”, the VC said.
