Gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram militants on Monday shot dead two men near their homes behind the railway quarters in Maiduguri, witnesses said in Maiduguri on Tuesday
Witnesses said the victims, suspected to be retired prison officers, were shot while preparing for the evening prayers.
“The gunmen came in a group of four all on a tricycle after 6p.m.Their arrival coincided with the period everybody was rushing for the prayers.
“They met the victims in front of their houses and fired several shots at them before disappearing,'' a witness said.
He said that the incident led to confusion as people ran for safety with many not returning to the mosque for prayers after the shooting.
However, Mr Samuel Tizhe, the spokesman of the Borno Police Command, declined comments on the issue saying, he had yet to be briefed on the development.
But a security source confirmed the story, saying that investigations had already on the matter.
