Gov. Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State on Monday said sustainable development could only be achieved in Nigeria if its citizens obeyed laws.
He spoke when a delegation of the Ikeja Branch of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) led by its Chairman, Mr Taiwo Taiwo, paid him a visit at the Government House, Ikeja.
Fashola said flagrant violation of laws and regulations by citizens was a major impediment to national development.
“To sustain our developmental strides, we must act that we are not going back.
“We must have a common purpose that we will act in a restrained manner and in accordance with the laws of the country,’’ he said.
The governor, who noted that Nigerians obey the laws of other countries, expressed worries over disrespecting and disobeying simple laws at home.?
Fashola added:“Nigerians comply with rules and regulations outside their country. Why can`t we do the same in our country?
“We have not shown enough love to where we call our home. We have treated what is ours with contempt.
“The attitude is a barrier to the country`s rise to greatness.
He urged the people to be law abiding to ensure the continued growth of the state.
Fashola, who said the administration would continue to provide an enabling environment for professions and businesses to thrive, however, cautioned against violating laws.
“The state holds a lot of opportunities for those who want to work, those who want to be professionals and most importantly, those who want to live according to our laws.
“The hospitality that the state offers is subject to compliance with rules and regulations. We must obey the rules and ensure that our developments are sustained,'' he said.
The governor promised that the state government would support the association and lawyers as promoters of law and order.
Earlier, the NBA chairman had commended the administration’s developmental strides, saying it had impacted significantly on the lives of the people.
He requested for a plot of land in the metropolis to enable the association to build its secretariat.
