Smith, Former IGP, Calls For Improved Funding For Police

A Former Inspector General of Police, Alhaji Musiliu Smith?has called for improved?funding for the police and other security outfits.

Smith told?the?News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Ilorin?that an improved funding?would?reduce?the current? security challenges.

The former Police boss said?that adequate financial motivation, training of personnel and purchase of up to date equipment would prepared security operatives for any security challenge.

Smith, similarly, called for accountability on the part of political and operational heads of the various security outfits in the country.

“When they are up and doing, it would be better for the nation.''

He praised the efforts of the National Security Adviser, Rtd Col.?Sambo Dasuki, for?the steps taken so far.

Smith?described the new acting IGP,?Mohammed Abubakar as a capable hand who had worked directly with him.

He said that if?Nigerians and the government gave Dasuki all the?support?he needed on his new assignment, the NSA?would improve the security situation in the country.

On the?bribery allegation?levelled against Rep.?Farouk Lawan by the?oil magnet and business mogul, Femi Otedola, the former IGP?described it as embarrassing to the nation and?called on?Nigerians to?allow the law to take its cause.

Smith?also appealed to Nigerians to join hands with the government and security agencies by providing them with adequate information on how best to do their jobs.

He?said?that the police alone could?not?provide security for the citizenry or fight crime to a larger extent, without the support of other stakeholders. (NAN)
