ASUU Raises The Alarm Over Abduction Of Lecturers

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Uyo? has raised the alarm over incessant abduction of its members by people believed to be kidnappers in Akwa Ibom State.

In a statement issued yesterday in Uyo by the Chairman of the Union, Nwachukwu Anyim and made available to LEADERSHIP, he said in the last seven weeks, two of his members had been kidnapped by gunmen suspected to be kidnappers.

Anyim, who decline to give the names of the kidnap victims, said one was a Professor in the Faculty of Education while the other was a lecturer in the law faculty.

The ASUU chairman urged the security operatives to double their efforts in protecting lives and property of the people.

Anyim said? the current rate of insecurity of lives and property of ASUU members in the state? had become a source of? great concern? to the union, stating that where lives of lecturers are constantly under threat, it would hamper the smooth conduct of academic activities.

His words: “We have decided not to give the names of the kidnapped victims for security reasons. The identities of the two people kidnapped are, one is a Professor of Education while the other is a Lecturer in Law. The Lecturer in Law was released two Thursdays ago, July 19, five days after his abduction.
