NAWOJ Asks Members To Use Security Tips

Hajiya Farida Abubakar, the Kaduna State Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), on Friday advised members to use security tips provided by experts for their safety.

Abubakar gave the advice during the second quarter meeting of the association in Kaduna.

She advised journalists to be security conscious and to report any suspicious person(s) or objects to security agents to prevent any security breach.

The chairperson criticised recent attacks on journalists in Warri as well as Daily Independent and Leadership Newspaper photo journalists, Messrs Nathaniel Jibrin and Benedict Uwalaka, respectively.

They were assaulted by some militants in Warri, Delta, irate mob in Kaduna and mortuary attendants of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), respectively, while on official assignments.

She urged the women to cooperate with security agents to avoid cases of harassment, assault or attack.

“Endeavour to use your identification cards and comply with the officers when they request to search you,’’ she advised.

The chairperson also called on members to shun sensational reports, but to be factual and report events that would promote peace, national unity and development.

“We have to be extremely careful about what we report. Let us report on things that would promote and sustain peace and unity in our country,’’ she said. (NAN)
