Two political parties, New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and Change Advocacy Party (CAP), have recommended death sentence as punishment for terrorists in the country.
Mr Gilbert Agbo, the National Chairman, NNPP, and Mr Lewis Abah, the National Chairman, Change Advocacy Party, (CAP), made the call in reaction to Senate’s decision to make a law prescribing life jail for terrorists.
Agbo told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Thursday, that life sentence was not enough to deter people from terrorist activities, adding that after serving their sentences, they could still return to such ungodly act.
“Any body that stays in prison for more than 25 years has fulfilled the term of life jail according to court language, so he could be released, if the person is alive.
“The case of the terrorists could be revisited by the government and released even before the time had expired, or sent for rehabilitation by such government which is dangerous,’’ Agbo said.
He said that drastic measures should be given to terrorists to serve as a lesson for others contemplating terrorist act.
“This terrorists are very heartless people as they don’t want the progress of the country.
“They should die like by firing squad, they should be killed the way they killed the people to secure the life of the citizens,’’ he said.
Agbo said that terrorism was strange to the country, adding that there were no penalties that would be too harsh to check the negative development.
He said that those that sponsored these terrorists should not be allowed to go scot-free, describing them as anti-government.
Agbo, who attributed terrorism to poverty, urged government to put in place mechanism to reduce the level of poverty in the country.
“If the poverty is properly addressed, terrorists would not find people to use again.
Abah, in his reaction, (CAP), Mr Lewis said that many Nigerians had lost their loved ones to terrorists, adding that they should not be spared the rod.
“Life jail for terrorists is as good as being free. If the terrorists know that they will spend 25 years and collect N50 million from their sponsors, they would collect it, life jail is under punishment,'' he said.
