Reps Urged To Intensify Efforts On Oversight

The House of Representatives has been called upon to strengthen its efforts and renew its capacity and interest to carry out more vigorous oversight functions rather than treading the parochial road of axe-grinding with agencies of government.

The National Coordinator, Coalition of Patriotic Democrats (CPD), Chief Ako Atulomah made the call at the weekend in Abuja while addressing a press conference on the recent face-off between the House and the Director General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC),Ms Arunma Oteh.

Chief Ako Atulomah said the House of Representatives overstepped its bounds when the House walked out delegation of SEC from the National Assembly as they appeared to defend the commission’s budget.? According to him, the action of the lawmakers will stall the integration of the commission’s budget into the nation’s 2013 appropriation bill.

The national coordinator called on the House to rescind on its earlier decision not to have anything to do with the commission, and give peace a chance for the advancement of the country.

‘’It is a manifest reality that some members of the House through persistent portrayal of personal interests have sought to bring disrepute to the name of the Honourable members and the hallowed chambers.”
