Gov. Ahmed Urges Khadis To Ensure Quick Dispensation Of Justice

Gov. AbdulFatah Ahmed of Kwara?on Wednesday?urged Khadis of the state Sharia Court of Appeal to be committed to quick dispensation of justice.

Ahmed made the call?in Ilorin during the legal year ceremony of the?court.

The governor, who was represented by his deputy,?Mr Peter Kisira, said?the judiciary should continue to live up to the expectation of the people in the dispensation of justice.

He said that one of the policies of?the administration was to jealously guard the principles of independence of the judiciary.

“This is premised on the fact that the independence of the judiciary is pivotal to the survival of democracy.

“Consequently, this administration has been doing all within its power to respect the sanctity of the rule of law and independence of the judiciary,’’ he added.

Ahmed, therefore, urged the Khadis to demonstrate commitment to people’s wishes, to make the?judiciary a world class institution.

Earlier, the Grand Khadi of the state, Alhaji Idris Haroon, commended the?government for the support given to?the judiciary.

Haroon stressed?the need to separate the Area Courts by classifying them into two on the basis of the applicable law.

He noted that if this was done, it would give room for the growth and development of law.

Haroon said it would enhance the quality of judgments of the affected courts as they would be supervised by experts in their areas of law.

He said?area courts operating?Sharia system should come under the?responsibility of the grand khadi, while others operating other laws should be accountable to the Chief Judge of the state. (NAN)
