Nasarawa Govt. To Settle Hospital Bills Of Injured University Students

The Nasarawa State Government will settle?hospital bills of students receiving treatment for injuries sustained during?the Feb. 25 students protest in the state, Dep.-Gov. Dameshi Luka has said.

Luka said this on Friday in Keffi when he paid a visit, on behalf of Gov. Tanko Al-Makura, to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) to see the students.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that students of Nasarawa State University in Keffi had staged a protest over water scarcity.

This had degenerated into a riot which led to the death of two students, with some others sustaining various degrees of injuries.

The deputy governor, while sympathising with the injured students, said the incident was unfortunate and prayed God to grant the injured students quick recovery.

He however advised the students to always channel their problems through appropriate channels.

“You should also embrace dialogue, rather than protests,’’ Luka said.

Dr. Ayuba Nagawa, the Chairman, Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Nasarawa state chapter who briefed the deputy governor on the students’ situation, said the situation was under control.

He said all the injured students brought for treatment had been discharged from the hospital, with the exception of one Abdulmajid Ofoku.

“Ofoku is responding to treatment and we hope he will be discharged very soon,” Nagawa said.

NAN reports that the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Shamsudeen Amali, accompanied the deputy governor on the visit.(NAN)
