Council Poll: Crisis Hits FCT PDP

A few days to the area council election in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is engulfed in serious crisis.

Investigation by LEADERSHIP Weekend revealed that as a result of the crisis, many card-carrying members of the party are secretly campaigning for the opposition parties.

According to our findings, the crux of the matter is based on the inability of many non-natives of FCT, who aspired for political positions in the council election, to secure the support of the party.

A PDP stalwart in FCT, Comrade Auston Ifedinezi, told our reporter that the party had refused to implement section 16:1 of the PDP Constitution, which stipulates equal representation for the six geo-political zones in the country, in the composition of the state party executive.

“The PDP in FCT has shot itself in the foot, because the party has refused to implement section 16:1 of the PDP constitution. They have therefore narrowed the party in FCT down to a little caucus members, who think that they must control the party, thereby sacking every other person in the party,” he said.

Comrade Ifedinezi noted that under section 16:1 of the PDP Constitution, each of the six geo-political zones in Nigeria must be fairly and equitably represented in the composition of the party’s state executive as well as in the area council wards.
