Jigawa Speaker Backs Amnesty For Boko Haram, LG Autonomy

Speaker of the Jigawa State House of Assembly, Hon Adamu Ahmed Sarawa has expressed his support for the proposal by the federal government to grant amnesty to members of Boko Haram.

He said that every true northerner would support President Goodluck Jonathan’s resolve to grant the group amnesty in the face of the crisis rocking parts of the north.

Speaker Sarawa also said that the forum did not deliberate on Local Government autonomy as reported, and stressed that the forum was not in any way against local government autonomy.

Adamu stated these, yesterday, while reacting to media reports of the just concluded speakers’ forum held in Minna, Niger state. He maintained that what was paramount was the peace and security of people residing in the north and added that every move for peace was welcome.

“What do you expect me to say about amnesty, I am a northerner and every northerner in this country will support President Jonathan’s move to grant the Boko Haram group amnesty, and we hope it will help end this whole nightmare in the north.”

Still on local government autonomy he said that “we found that report shocking because we did not even deliberate on it. As soon as the National Assembly concludes its deliberation on it, we will come up with our position on it. But we legislators are in full support of local government autonomy.

“We believe that with the approval of local government autonomy, the people at the grassroots will enjoy more dividends of democracy and the local government chairmen will be able to execute laudable projects for their people.”
