Day-old Baby Found Dumped Near Stream In Jos, Police Confirms

A day- old baby boy was found  on Monday dumped near a stream at the Race Course area of Jos, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

The baby was found at 6 a.m., directly opposite the main campus of the University of Jos by a mechanic, one Malam Abubakar Garba.

Garba told NAN that he was about to cross the stream on his way to attend a naming ceremony, when he heard the cry of the little baby by the bank of the stream.

``When I heard the cry of a baby at that odd hour, I got scared, but I mustered the courage to peep into the bank where I saw the baby in a basket.

``The baby was worn a sweater, while a towel was also wrapped around him.''

He said that he called some neighbours who took the baby to Sharna Police Station near University of Jos.

``The police then directed us to take the baby to a nearby hospital where a medical check-up confirmed that the baby was healthy.''

Garba said that the baby had been taken to the ward head of Angwan-Rogo, Alhaji Mohammed Sani, for safe keeping.

Meanwhile, the Police Commissioner in the state, Mr Chris Olakpe, could not be reached for comments, but a senior police officer attached to Angwan-Rogo Police Station, who spoke to NAN on condition of anonymity, confirmed the discovery of the baby.

The officer said that Garba had indicated interest in adopting baby before it was later resolved that the baby should be taken to the ward head's house.

He said that the police had embarked on an intensive investigation to ascertain the whereabouts of the mother of the baby  to prosecute her for such cruelty. (NAN)

Court Jails Man For Machete Attack

An Ado-Ekiti  Magistrates’  court has  sentenced one Tunmise Abraham, an auto-mechanic,  to two years imprisonment  for  grievously hurting  two persons with  a machete.

Magistrate Bayode Owoeye convicted the accused person while delivering  judgment in a two-count charge brought against Abraham  for assaulting one Oke Ajibola and Tony Ayodele

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the two-count charge  carries  one  year term each as penalty without an option of fine.

``I have considered the facts  presented before this court vis-à-vis the plea of  guilty by the accused.

`` He is hereby found guilty as charged and convicted and the jail term shall not run concurrently,’’ he said.

Mr Ebenezer Ewuola, the police prosecutor, had earlier told the court that Abraham on Oct. 2  wounded  his victims  by attempting to cut  their necks with a machete.

According to Ewuola, the convict attacked his victims at about 1:30 pm beside Nova School in  Ado-Ekiti.

The prosecutor submitted that the accused person admitted to have committed the acts.

``The confessional statement of the accused was admitted as evidence in court.

``The accused person deserves maximum sentence as his intention was to kill the victims,’’ he said.

The prosecutor submitted that the attacks,  which left deep cuts  on the necks of the two victims,  contravened Section 335 of the Criminal Code Cap 77 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 1990 as amended.

Abraham, who was not represented by a  counsel, had pleaded guilty to the charge and prayed the court to tender justice with mercy. (NAN)
