QUICKWORD: Sama Rhymes

Sama Rhymes,
Olusola Olufemi Farinde, just recently released a brand new dance
music, ‘Loke Loke’ off his debut ‘P.U.M.A.’ The graduate of Industrial
chemistry from The University of Lagos has performed many gigs
including the Sony Ericsson Campus Storm, Indomie Valentine Show, O
Noodles Campus Storm and many others. He made his entry into
professional music making in 2009 with the release of ‘Girl I send You’.

What inspired the track ‘Loke Loke’?

Actually this is
the first time I’ll be writing over a beat; I usually write my songs
before asking for a beat for it. I was at the Kennis Music studio
recording with Master Craft when he offered me the beat and said I had
to record over it the next day. When I heard the beat the first thing
that came to my mind is Loke Loke (Upward and Upward).

With a new single that is enjoying commendable airplay out, does this mean a full album is around the corner?

Yes, the album is
planned for a May release this year. Most of the songs are already
recorded; we are adding some finishing touches to them. We are trying
to do our best to make sure the album is well packed with great songs.

Who are the guest artists on the album?

I have Sheyman, SolidStar, Reminisce and Jah Bless.

Is it going to be released independently or are you already signed to a record label?

I am already signed
to Rhymes Squad Entertainments in Lagos. The Label’s Chief Executive
Officer is based in Amsterdam presently.

What is the main challenge you had to overcome to record the album?

The main challenge
has been getting enough financial support since I am a new artist.
There are also challenges in form of pressure from friends and family
to get a white collar job since I graduated with a 2:1 in Industrial
Chemistry from the University of Lagos. Weird as it may appear, I
decided to pick music over a career in an oil firm because for me doing
what makes me happy is far more important than doing what gets you
rich. More so, music does not only make me happy, I’m getting paid for
it so it will soon start making me rich.

Aside music, what else do you do?

I am a martial
artist; I have a black belt in Karate and also practice Kong-Fu and
Kick Boxing as well. I represented Unilag in Karate at some point; I
will also be representing Lagos State at the upcoming Sports Festival.
Martial Art is like the binding force between me and music; Karate has
taught me the power of focus and I apply it to music making.
