The Chief Medical
Director of Roding Reproductive Centre, Lagos, Adewunmi Adeyemi-Bero,
on Thursday, recommended a relatively new and cheaper method of
artificial insemination, known as “vitrification”, to couples who had
the challenge of infertility.

“The survival rate
of vitrified embryos is much higher than that of cryo-preserved
embryos,” he said. He explained that embryo survival rate, using the
vitrification method, has a 95 per cent success rate as compared to the
70 per cent survival rate of the conventional ‘freeze-thaw’ method.

He described
vitrification as an induced-fertility pregnancy method which involves
the freezing of embryos 600 times faster than in the conventional
method through the process of cryo-preservation.

The medical expert stated that on the whole, vitrification was less
complicated and a lot cheaper than IVF which most people were used to.
Adeyemi-Bero further disclosed that currently, the centre has 40
vitrified embryos in storage facility for patients who had indicated
interest in the method.
