As part of its contributions towards Nigeria’s development, the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) has promised to assist the country develop its industrial and agriculture sectors in order to achieve its Vision 20-2020.
Giving this indication yesterday in Abuja, UNIDO consultant, Professor Franklyn Lisk, who noted that UNIDO was aware of the leading and important role Nigeria plays in Africa, identified agriculture, health, housing and education sectors as major areas of intervention.
He said that UN system approach would like to place more emphasis on smallholder agriculture for the country, and see it as a business and industry and not treat it in a traditional sense, emphasising that the global value chain in agriculture was a massive industry yet to be tapped into by Africa.
He also noted that recent studies showned that Nigeria did have a labour market information system that would be able to tell what is happening in the labour market and what type of skills were needed for the unemployed.
Lisk assured that within UNIDO’s second conceptual framework for the country, the question of how to tailor Nigeria’s educational system to respond to its needs would be seriously viewed.
He also said the Nigerian government should be thinking in the direction of putting in place a social housing policy that would address the housing deficits in the country, adding that housing should be conceived as an investment and not otherwise.
