‘UNILORIN 49’ Return To Court To Enforce Judgment

The 49 teachers at the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) whose removal were reversed by the Supreme Court two years ago, have returned to the court to enforce the implementation of the judgment terms by the university.

The lecturers, are asking the Federal High Court in Ilorin to direct the university authority to comply fully with all the terms of the Supreme Court judgment.

The terms? as? granted by the supreme court include the payment of the lecturers’? allowances and promotion benefits.

The lecturers ,once? again resorted to legal action after talks broke down? between them and? the University.

Their lawyer, Mr. John Baiyeshea (SAN)?? had been meeting with the University’s management on the need?? for the University to implement the supreme court verdict .

Baiyeshea had in a letter of May 2011 to the University stated that only a full implementation of the orders of the court would be acceptable. Thereafter, he had apparently handed over to a new lawyer,
Mr. Toyin Oladipo, to proceed against the University for the enforcement of the full orders of the Supreme Court.

The orders of the Supreme Court are for the unconditional reinstatement of the lecturers, payment of their salaries and allowances from February 2001 to Dec 2009 and the restoration of all other rights, entitlements and perquisites missed during the period of the reinstatement. However, it was gathered that, other than the reinstatement and full payment of salaries to some of the lecturers, the University was yet to accord the lecturers other rights such as leaves, sabbaticals and promotions.
