Nigerians resident in Garoua, northern Cameroon have appealed the Federal Government to check security challenges in Nigeria.
The chairman of Imo/Abia Association in Garoua, Mr Vitalis Ibeabuchi, made the appeal on behalf of his compatriots when he spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Garoua on Saturday.
He said the security challenges posed by insurgent groups had made many Nigerians from some states in northern Nigeria to emigrate to Garoua.
He said Nigerians in Garoua recently received their compatriots fleeing from the Boko Haram group in Banki, a border town between Borno and Cameroon.
Ibeabuchi also pleaded with the Federal Government to direct the Nigerian ambassador in Cameroon to visit Nigerians resident in northern Cameroon.
“But, there is one particular thing that is disturbing us.
“For the past four years, no Nigerian ambassador has ever visited this Garoua. For the past four years, no Nigerian ambassador has ever visited Garoua.
“And, everybody overture we have made to let them know that Nigerians are here, they have turned a deaf ear.
“I was surprised to hear a few days ago that the last ambassador has been sent off; he has gone back home after staying four years.
“Throughout his tenure he never cared to know whether there is Nigerians or not.
“So, whatever problem we have, we have been solving it in our own way.’’
Ibeabuchi said the Nigerian community in Garoua numbered up to 5,000 and consisted of mainly businessmen and women.
“We have been law abiding and have no problem with our host country.
“Our concern is security challenges in Nigeria because its effect is being felt here. Many Nigerians are here now because of the fear of Boko Haram,’’ he said.
