FRSC Threatens To Prosecute Motorists Driving Against Traffic

The FRSC has warned motorists violating traffic regulations between Mogadishu Cantonment and Karu bridge along the Abuja-Nyanya-Keffi highway to desist from the act or be arrested and prosecuted.

Mr Narth Ugboh, the FRSC Unit Commander at Nyanya, gave the warning in an interview with newsmen on Friday in Abuja.

Ugboh expressed worry that most of the motorists who were in the habit of driving against traffic were uniformed men and drivers of government vehicles.

He, however, said that the unit had specifically deployed men and patrol vehicles to address the problem.

According to him, 16 operatives and patrol vehicles have been deployed to the affected areas and will man the section between 3:00 p.m? and 10:00 p.m daily until the situation normalises.

“Most of the motorists are uniformed men and those in charge of government vehicles and they have been threatening us with guns.

“Yesterday (Thursday), I personally led the operation to turn them back. The uniformed men and those in charge of government vehicles took the lead and others followed.’’

Ugboh warned that henceforth any motorists caught contravening traffic standards would be arrested and prosecuted.

NAN observed that some motorists who plied the route in recent times had resorted to using one-way to beat traffic jam thereby compounding the chaotic traffic situation on the road.

NAN further observed that motorists heading to the Nyanya-Mararaba axis from the city centre negotiated left after the barracks using the overhead bridge and took one-way to their destination, using the by-pass leading into the barracks.

The heavy traffic on the route is due to the rush hours in the morning and at the close of work when businessmen and civil servants head for home.

Many of them reside at Mararaba in Nasarawa State, which is about 12 kilometres from the FCT.
