Three orphans of different orphanages in the FCT have been given scholarship up to university level by Youth Empowerment Education Initiative, a Non Governmental Organisation after winning a quiz competition which was organised by the group for students in different orphanages in the FCT.
The contestants who were ten in number competed in three subjects namely Mathematics, English language and Current Affairs and four questions were attempted by each contestant.?
The first two winners, Abednego Iyemoh and Amaka Umar who emerged with 85 percent each are from Hope for Survival Children's Orphanage Home and Abuja Childrens Home respectively, and the third, Uche Peter Edike from St. Mary's Orphanage Home Maryland, Gwagwalada.
The chairman of the occasion, Prof Nuhu Yaquob in his opening remarks,? charged the media to be more conscious and sensitive to programmes aired for the benefit of students who would prefare to watch Nollywood than educational programmes like quiz and debate competitions.
He said 'Nollywood has no educational relevance as much as educational competitions. NTA should be called to reconsider programmes aired'.
He said gone are the days when students were encouraged to go to libraries and read books in order to develop themselves and not necessarily because they want to pass examinations. 'They were encouraged to do some research, read wide and extensively because they want to excel.'
The founder and president of Albinno Foundation in Nigeria, Mr Jake Ekpele, during his goodwill message, charged the orphans concerning making the best of every opportunity given to them as far as education is concerned as it is a catalyst for success. He charged them to appreciate themselves and find their God given roles so that they can make impacts to the society.
Founder of the NGO, Mr Edewor Christopher, in his speech, remarked that 'the world is a global village and the Nigerian child has to compete with people who have modern, adequate and up-to-date infrastructures without room for the excuse of failure', hence the reason for the competition.
