A Non Governmental Organisation, Initiative for Mass Education Against Corruption, MEAC, yesterday said its investigations into the alleged corruption charges leveled against former Kogi State governor, Ibrahim Idris by Dino Melaye,? an ex-lawmaker from the state was false.
Addressing select journalists in Abuja at a press conference, IMEAC’s editorial adviser, Austin Akubo, stated that the group had taken it upon itself to verify the allegations made against the governor but discovered that there was no iota of truth in the petition forwarded to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Akubo who was joined by the group’s General Manager, Yahaya Enape, and Idy James, Manager Corporate Affairs, affirmed that the resolve to dig into the matter was borne out of the need to eradicate corruption from the society. He explained that the allegations leveled against the ex-governor had been cross checked with the EFCC and found to be untrue. The group which passed a vote of no confidence on the ex-lawmaker, pointed out that the anti corruption war need not be hijacked for political or other reasons.
According to the group, the EFCC had conducted its investigations into the allegations and discovered that much of the property alluded to in the petition had long been acquired by the ex-governor before becoming governor of the state. The foreign accounts he was alleged to own were reportedly operated by him even before becoming governor.
The anti corruption group which urged the public to discountenance allegations made by the ex -lawmaker later referred to the directive by the presidency in 2008 which ordered? the EFCC and the ICPC to investigate the matter.
The findings of the two anti graft agencies which he said were officially forwarded to the then president absolved the former governor of any financial crime.
