The Eastern Naval Command of the Nigerian Navy has been commended for curbing the menace of sea pirates and illegal oil bunkering in the Niger Delta Region.
Gov. Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom made the commendation on Friday in Uyo when the out-going Flag Officer, Eastern Naval Command, Rear Admiral Benjamin Ogunjobi, paid him a courtesy visit.
“I thank the Nigerian Navy for the contributions it has made both in the waterways and on the land, particularly some of your men in the NNS Jubilee who helped to provide security to the state.
“I must congratulate the Navy on its efforts in the protection of lives. We will continue to support you and provide the necessary logistics to combat crimes on our waterways,” Akpabio said.
He said that the state government was considering the possibility of providing the Navy with patrol boats for use in fighting crime.
“Your tenure has brought adequate security in the state where so many incidents of piracy were checked in the waterways and millions of dollars saved.
“The issue of oil bunkering has been greatly reduced to the barest minimum thus helping to boost the economy. You have been a true naval officer in dressing and in conduct.
“You have shown enough humility and we have enjoyed robust support from your officers posted to us,’’ Akpabio said.
The governor congratulated the out-going flag officer on his new posting to oversee training at Naval Headquarters.
Earlier speaking, Ogunjobi thanked Akpabio for being a source of encouragement to him and for supporting and identifying with his command during his stay in the area.
He said that the cooperation enjoyed from the state government had brought him success during his stay in the command.
He expressed delight that Akwa Ibom waterways had remained calm and safe during his tenure. (NAN)
