Owolabi Wants Flying Eagles Overhauled Before U-20 World Cup

A former Nigerian midfielder, Felix Owolabi, has called for the overhaul of the Flying Eagles before the 2013 World Cup in Turkey in June.

Owolabi spoke on Saturday in Lagos against the backdrop of the team’s inability to defend their African Youth Championship (AYC) title in the 2013 edition recently concluded in Algeria.

He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the players performed poorly as title defenders.

NAN recalls that the Flying Eagles won a consolatory bronze medal at the AYC in Algeria.

“They didn’t perform well at all; their performance did not befit defending champions.

“It was an eyesore. Well, I am sure that the technical crew is going to work something out before the World Cup.

“John Obuh needs to re-examine the team, he needs to overhaul it, it may not be a total overhaul, but it is obvious that some players have not justified their inclusion in the team.

“World Cup is no child’s play, it will be tough and we need committed and competent players who won’t embarrass us in Turkey,’’ Owolabi said.

NAN reports that Flying Eagles would play in Group B alongside Cuba, Portugal and North Korea in Turkey.
