S/African Police Warn Fans Not To Take Umbrellas To Stadium

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has warned football fans who are to attend the opening match of the 2013 African Cup of Nations not to bring umbrellas to the stadium.

The opening game is between the host nation South Africa and debutants, Cape Verde Island on Saturday at the National Stadium in Johannesburg.

The SAPS said on Saturday in Johannesburg that the fans should instead come to the stadium with their raincoats.

“A warning has been issued by the South Africa Weather Service that there might be flash floods in Johannesburg as from Friday,’’ Lt.-Col. Lungelo Dlamini, SAPS spokesman said.

He said the police, other law enforcement agencies and disaster management centre would be watching if the weather condition might have an impact on the security measure for the tournament.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that there had been rain across Johannesburg since the early hours of Friday.

The country’s weather service had warmed of 80 to 100 per cent possibility of heavy rainfall and flooding across seven provinces in South Africa.
