The Nigerian Police Force has commissioned one of its academies situated in Wudil, Kano State, to a degree awarding institution for only members of the police force, thereby bringing the number of Nigerian universities to 124.
During the commissioning ceremony, the executive secretary of National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof Julius Okojie, called on its management to ensure that adequate courses are run due to its specialized nature.
He stressed that for maximum standard to be maintained, police candidates who seek for admission into the academy should be made to sit for university matriculation examination organized by the Joint Admission and Matriculations Board (JAMB) since the academy is a degree awarding institution.
The Minister of Police Affairs, Navy Capt Caleb Olubolade, in his speech, said that the police required an institution that is service oriented, especially now that the state of insecurity in the land called for dedicated training and capacity building, and remarked that the police will benefit from the institution.
The executive secretary of Tertiary Trust Fund (TETFund), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, said that a lot is expected from the academy especially as it will be following in the footsteps of Nigeria Defence Academy (NDA). He stressed that the training in the academy is not only for officers who have since passed degree level but for upcoming officers who need to grow to degree level.
