Court Jails Man For Machete Attack

An Ado-Ekiti  Magistrates’  court has  sentenced one Tunmise Abraham, an auto-mechanic,  to two years imprisonment  for  grievously hurting  two persons with  a machete.

Magistrate Bayode Owoeye convicted the accused person while delivering  judgment in a two-count charge brought against Abraham  for assaulting one Oke Ajibola and Tony Ayodele

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the two-count charge  carries  one  year term each as penalty without an option of fine.

``I have considered the facts  presented before this court vis-à-vis the plea of  guilty by the accused.

`` He is hereby found guilty as charged and convicted and the jail term shall not run concurrently,’’ he said.

Mr Ebenezer Ewuola, the police prosecutor, had earlier told the court that Abraham on Oct. 2  wounded  his victims  by attempting to cut  their necks with a machete.

According to Ewuola, the convict attacked his victims at about 1:30 pm beside Nova School in  Ado-Ekiti.

The prosecutor submitted that the accused person admitted to have committed the acts.

``The confessional statement of the accused was admitted as evidence in court.

``The accused person deserves maximum sentence as his intention was to kill the victims,’’ he said.

The prosecutor submitted that the attacks,  which left deep cuts  on the necks of the two victims,  contravened Section 335 of the Criminal Code Cap 77 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 1990 as amended.

Abraham, who was not represented by a  counsel, had pleaded guilty to the charge and prayed the court to tender justice with mercy. (NAN)

Police Beef Up Security In Lagos Ahead Of Yuletide

The Lagos State Police Command said on Friday that the force had made adequate security arrangements ahead of the Christmas and New Year festivities.

The command announced that special security strategies have been evolved to secure public places, including worship centres, markets, departmental stores, parks, gardens and event venues during the period.

DSP Ngozi Braide, spokesperson of the command, disclosed this during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

``Tight security is in place, as well as intensified motorised patrols, while undercover operatives have been deployed to strategic places all over the state," Braide said.

The spokesperson added that the command, in collaboration with the FRSC, had designed measures to ensure the safety of residents and motorists on the highways during the period.

He expressed happiness that the ban on the operation of commercial motorcycles, popularly known as Okada, on highways by the state government had drastically reduced the crime rate by about 90 per cent.

``The ban on Okada has contributed to the reduction of armed robbery by 90 per cent. This is because the  command has witnessed a drastic drop in robbery cases .

``Kidnappings too have been reduced as a result of the ban, because after abduction, the victims are usually moved around on Okada.

``Most of the places where they keep their victims are not motorable and are far from the metropolis," she said.

Braide added that the kidnap victims have also been spared the trauma of using commercial motorcycles to get to their final destinations.

She, however, called on members of the public to always be on the alert and report the movements of suspicious persons or groups to the nearest police station. (NAN)
